What Should I Include in My BFA Art Portfolio?

A strong BFA portfolio demonstrates your artistic skills, creative thinking, and potential to grow as an artist or designer. Colleges look for a combination of technical ability, original ideas, experimentation, and individual expression.

What Should My Portfolio Include?

Observational Drawing and Representation
Demonstrate your ability to draw from direct observation through still lifes, self-portraits, figure drawings, and other subjects. Show your understanding of proportion, composition, perspective, form, and value.

Imaginative, Abstract and Conceptual Work
Include original projects that demonstrate your imagination, creative thinking, and ability to develop ideas. Explore subjects that interest you and communicate your ideas through visual work.

Experimentation with Materials
Show explorations in different materials, techniques, and approaches. Consider incorporating painting, collage, mixed media, sculpture, photography, or digital media when appropriate to your interests and intended major.

Sketchbook and Process Work
Include selected sketches, studies, and experiments that demonstrate how you develop ideas, solve visual problems, and refine your work.

Personal Projects
Choose work that reflects your individual interests, perspective, and creative direction. Your portfolio should communicate your strengths and potential.

What Are Colleges Looking For?

Requirements vary by school and major. We will help you identify what to include based on the schools you are applying to. In general, admissions reviewers consider:

• Technical skills and visual foundations.

• Originality, imagination, and creative thinking.

• Conceptual development and problem-solving.

• Experimentation with materials and techniques.

• Individual interests and artistic expression.

• The ability to develop and communicate ideas visually.

How Many Pieces Should I Include?

Portfolio requirements vary by college and program. Some schools specify the number and types of projects to submit, while others allow greater flexibility.

Research the requirements for each school on your list and select work that best demonstrates your abilities, interests, and potential. Quality, variety, and thoughtful selection are more important than simply including more pieces.

How Can I Make My Portfolio Stand Out?

Develop a strong foundation in observational drawing while creating original projects that reflect your interests and ideas. Show both what you can do and how you think creatively. Select work that demonstrates a range of skills, materials, and approaches while maintaining a clear sense of your individual artistic direction.

Led by Michelle Hinebrook, a Pratt Institute professor and professional artist, AEA provides expert instruction and personalized guidance to help students strengthen their skills, develop original work, and prepare competitive college portfolios.

Through individualized instruction, AEA helps students strengthen their drawing skills, explore materials and techniques, develop original ideas, and make thoughtful artistic decisions. Our approach helps each student create a portfolio that meets application requirements while expressing their unique personality, interests, and creative vision.

• Portfolio Selection: We help students select and sequence their strongest work.
• Professional Photography: We professionally photograph and color-correct all portfolio artwork.
• Video Interview: We help students prepare a script and record and edit a three-minute video discussing three artworks: their self-portrait, still life, and one student-selected piece. Discuss subject matter, materials, motivation, techniques, influences, and the decisions behind each piece.
• Written Artist Statement: Alternatively, we help students develop a written explanation of up to 500 words covering their artistic process, materials, motivations, techniques, influences, and creative decisions.
